Stained Mother of Pearl

Stained mother-of-pearl builds on the traditional inlay technique but introduces custom color through staining, giving this noble material a new, contemporary vibrancy. The process involves cutting and embedding mother-of-pearl pieces into carved surfaces using the classic Levantine inlay technique. Once in place, the surface is carefully stained, allowing the color to permeate the material and enhance its natural iridescence. Nada Debs was inspired by the bold contrasts found in Japanese manga, bringing unexpected color to a craft traditionally prized for its subtle shimmer. Through this technique, she expanded the expressive potential of mother-of-pearl, blending heritage with playful, modern aesthetics.
